Chinese National Day Approaches: U.S. Route Suspension Plans and How to Mitigate Strike Risks

As the Chinese National Day Golden Week draws near, major shipping companies are adjusting their capacity to account for the holiday period. On August 26, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company announced adjustments to its sailing schedule. In anticipation of potential demand slowdowns during and after Golden Week, MSC will optimize its Asia-to-U.S. routes between weeks 38 and 41, canceling some sailings to balance capacity and maintain market stability.

Eastbound Trans-Pacific routes will see the highest suspension rate, with 56% of total cancellations, followed by 24% for routes from Asia to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, and 20% for Westbound Transatlantic routes.

Meanwhile, Drury has forecasted a possible strike by dock workers on the U.S. East Coast and Gulf Coast starting October 1, which could further disrupt supply chains. Shippers face significant risks of delays due to the potential strike. Some may choose to send cargo to the East Coast but should be prepared for delays, especially when using full-sea routes, which, while cost-effective, are also riskier.

To mitigate strike risks, shippers can consider two options: first, send cargo to the nearest rail station and then transport by truck; second, offload on the West Coast and then transport to the East Coast. Given the high volume at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports, choosing the West Coast as an alternative might increase costs but ensure more reliable delivery times. Shippers and freight forwarders should plan their transport routes early and maintain close communication with shipping companies and clients to ensure smooth cargo flow and minimize the impact of capacity adjustments or market fluctuations.

U.S. Consumer Confidence Index Rises

In August, the U.S. Consumer Confidence Index rose for the second consecutive month, reaching a near six-month high. This positive trend is driven by increased consumer optimism about the economic outlook and inflation expectations. According to the latest data from the Conference Board released on August 27, the Consumer Confidence Index increased to 103.3, up from a revised 101.9 in the previous month, surpassing the Bloomberg survey median forecast of 100.7.

Specifically, the measure of expectations for the next six months rose from 81.1 to 82.5, and the present situation index increased from 133.1 to 134.4. Although confidence in the labor market has weakened somewhat, the overall positive sentiment has effectively countered this.

CMA CGM Launches First Trans-Pacific Route

CMA CGM has achieved a significant milestone in its air cargo operations. On August 18, 2024, the third Boeing 777-200F freighter officially began operations on a new Trans-Pacific route from Asia to North America. Operated by Atlas Air, this route covers key hubs such as Hong Kong, Chicago, and Seoul. The maiden voyage on August 26 successfully traveled from Hong Kong to Chicago, with a stop in Anchorage and a return via Seoul.

CMA CGM plans to deliver a second freighter of the same model in Q4 2024, further enhancing its trans-Pacific cargo capacity. The addition of these two freighters will increase CMA CGM’s weekly Trans-Pacific flights to seven, significantly improving service range and operational efficiency.

Looking ahead to 2025, CMA CGM will continue to expand its fleet and plans to deliver a third freighter to extend its service range and provide flexible, efficient cargo solutions. CMA CGM Air Cargo CEO Damien Mazaudier stated that the new route is a strategic milestone for the company, demonstrating its commitment to responding to market changes and creating customer value, while further solidifying its position in the global cargo market.
